Betsy dies from brain cancer 12 days before her 66th birthday.
In an obituary posted on the website of the DNA Repair Group of the National Institutes of Health, John Dunn, acting chair of the Biology Department at Brookhaven, said: “The loss of Betsy Sutherland is a great loss for the Biology Department and the worldwide community of scientists who are focused on DNA damage and repair....Her work on DNA damage is still very pertinent today, since skin cancer is becoming more prevalent and future space missions may send astronauts to outer regions in space where they may be exposed to damaging ionizing radiation.”
